Porsche is known for making exceptionally fuel efficient performance vehicles. It's a promise that's about to get even stronger as the second-generation Boxster and Cayman models will soon ship with a revised and more efficient powertrain lineup.
The engine lineup for both machines has been blessed with direct injection, a technology newly available in the 911 range. Direct injection allows for a more precise use of fuel in the combustion chamber, optimizing both power and consumption figures. The end result is a power boost alongside an improvement in mileage.
Output changes are as follows: The basic 2.9 liter engine cranks out 255 horsepower in the Boxster, and 265 in the Cayman- improvements of 10 and 20, respectively. In the Boxster S and Cayman S, direct injection bumps power figures for the larger 3.4 liter flat-six to 310 and 320, an increase of 15 and 25 ponies, respectively.
The pronunciation-defying Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe transmission (call it "PDK", please) further increases fuel economy and performance, and allows both models to achieve under 9 liters per 100 km in the fuel mileage departments.
Shoppers can expect new lights and interior tweaks like an updated entertainment system as well. The second-generation Cayman and Boxster models are being presented at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
