Former Honda Performance Development president Robert Clarke left a meeting with representatives of Japan's Twin Ring Motegi circuit optimistic that reunification talks of the two open wheel series; Tony George's Indy Racing League and Kevin Kalkhoven's Champ Car could continue.
One stumbling block remains and it could be enough to stop a move towards a 'merger' for the coming season, with the Japanese oval currently occupying the date that Long Beach.
According to the Indianapolis Star newspaper, options include moving Motegi to August, or to make it a non-points event tacked on at the end of the season.
"It was a good meeting," Clarke said, "Am I optimistic [about unification]? I don't see any reason why not." Clarke was joined at the meeting by George and IRL series presidents Brian Barnhart and Terry Angstadt.
