Mustang may be one of the most desirable new cars on the market right now and therefore hard to find, but Ford plans to keep rolling variations of the sporty car out to fan new fires of consumer interest.

In time a couple of extra-hotrod models will be available, but for 2006 there's a Pony Package with a V-6 and some go-fast and look-fast parts to deliver a more performance-oriented attitude.

There will also be four distinct wheel- and tire-combinations for the Mustang GT trim, including two all-new 18-inch sets complemented by unique suspension tuning.

On the cosmetic front, Vista Blue Clearcoat Metallic and Tungsten Grey Clearcoat Metallic join the exterior paint list right away, and an additional, darker aluminum interior upgrade will be available later in the model year.

Mustang has had a roller-coaster history since its 1964 introduction and was almost killed by Ford at least once, but it is hot again thanks to the unabashedly retro styling wrapped around more sophisticated running gear that debuted in 2005.

It's that basic package that Ford will add the V-6 Pony Package to, $1,595 on top of the price of the car, which would be $23,995 for the Coupe and $27,995 for the Mustang Convertible.

For that money you get the 4-litre V-6 that sends 210 hp at 5,250 rpm and 240 lb-ft of torque at 3,500 rpm to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission and a nice little list of cosmetic additions and technical upgrades.

The tech upgrades would include a "GT-inspired" suspension system (meaning a rear stabilizer bar and a larger front stabilizer bar have been added), anti-lock brakes, and all-speed traction control.

Seventeen-inch wheels and tires and a rear spoiler might also fit in the tech toy category of the Pony Package, but their primary job will likely be making the Mustang look better. Other items dedicated to that purpose include a unique grille, fog lamps, and Pony badging and tape stripe.

Inside there are carpeted floor mats with a unique brushed chrome Mustang badge.

Other standard features on the V-6 include air conditioning, a tilt steering wheel, remote keyless entry, an AM/FM stereo with a single CD holder and a clock, dual outside mirrors, a six-way power driver's seat, power windows and locks, and four-wheel disc brakes.

A four-speed automatic transmission is optional on the V-6.

For 2006, the Mustang GT Coupe will carry an MSRP of $32,995 and the GT Convertible an MSRP of $36,995.
