NASCAR Canadian Tire: JR Fitzpatrick is first in Edmonton

JR Fitzpatrick had the fastest car on the track in the first NASCAR Canadian Tire Series practice session on Friday for the Canadian Tire 100 at the Indy Edmonton.

Fitzpatrick, out of Cambridge, Ontario, and winner of the 2007 Edmonton race, made his way around the 1.973-mile, 14-turn temporary road course in 1:22.193 which translates to an average speed of 86.416 mph shortly after the session got underway.

Scott Steckly, a podium finisher here the last two years, was second-quick at 1:22.914 (85.665 mph) followed by Kerry Micks at 1:23.393 (85.560).

Points leader DJ Kennington (1:23.211/85.359) and Anthony Simone (1:23.307/85.261) recorded the fourth and fifth-fastest times, respectively.

The remainder of the top 10 consisted of Trevor Seibert, Jason Hathaway, Ron Beauchamp, Jr., Don Thomson Jr. and Daryl Harr, who is from nearby St. Albert, Alberta.

Two-time series’ champion Andrew Ranger is not taking part in this event.

The cars will be back on the track for the final practice session on Saturday at 8:15 a.m. MT and qualifying is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.

The Canadian Tire 100 presented by Konica Minolta is slated to go green at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
