Carl Edwards used some help from his teammate Greg Biffle to win the pole for the Watkins Glen Sprint Cup race.

“This is unbelievable. I can’t tell you how much this helps our team and our confidence. I couldn’t believe it when Bob (Osborne – his crew chief) said P1. I thought he said P21 or something. Man that was a great lap,” Edwards said.

He added: “I have to say thank you to Greg Biffle and Greg Erwin (Biffle’s crew chief) and all those guys. They helped us so much and that car was much better than what we came up with. Their set up is spectacular.”

“I’m having a blast! My road racing has picked up a lot from a lot of help from… Greg and Boris Said,” he explained after winning his fifth series pole and first in two years.

“Yeah, they asked me when my last pole was and I had no clue. It has been a long time. It feels good,” Edwards added. Driving a Ford, he turned a lap of 70.88 seconds around the Glen’s short course.

Second went to Jamie McMurray, at 71.24 seconds, who was slightly faster than teammate Juan Pablo Montoya, at 71.30 in Chevrolet.

“We’re just having a really good year,” said McMurray who won the Daytona 500 and Brickyard 400 this year. It seems like when everything is going your way, it all goes well. This has actually been a pretty good track for me. I ran third here a few years ago and really had a shot to win towards the end of the race.

AJ Allmendinger, who just announced a contract renewal with RPM, was fourth fastest in a Ford. “I felt like I got everything that I could out of it. To be that close to Juan and the pole at that point is good,” he said.

Kurt Busch was fifth quickest in a Dodge.

Patrick Carpentier qualified 17th, making him the fastest Canadian in the field. He said, with a patented large grin, that he raced the entire 90-lap race distance in his mind last night.

“The guys did a great job it was loose yesterday and they fixed it We were shooting the whole run yesterday. We talked and improved the car; we have a great race car,” he said.

Ron Fellows, who was 21th fastest in a JR Motorsports Chevrolet, looked relieved when he said, “the issue is trying to make the show. I was cautious in the brake zones. Now we can sleep because we made the race. Tommy (Baldwin – the team owner) and the guys have done a good job,” said the Toronto resident.

Series points’ leader Kevin Harvick was 21rst.

The three drivers who failed to make the race are JJ Yeley, Dave Blaney and Tony Ave.
