Carl Edwards (Ford No 99) won the Sunoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup race on Sunday afternoon at the Pocono Raceway with only a few drops of fuel left in the gas tank. Many of his pursuers went out of fuel at the very last lap.
Tony Stewart (Camry No 20) followed Edwards some 5 seconds later at the finish line as Jimmie Johnson (Chevy No 48) came in third. Series point leader Kyle Busch (Camry No 18) ended up 36th because he had to stop for fuel some two laps before the end.
Canadian Patrick Carpentier did not participate in the event because the team owners wanted him to concentrate on the Montreal Nationwide event (in which he finished second), so it was veteran Terry Labonte who substituted for him at the wheel of the No 10 Dodge Charger and he ended up 32nd.
There were seven yellow flag situations for 31 laps including a red flag situation for less than an hour because of a rain shower.
