The NASCAR Sprint Cup competitors had two free practice sessions on Saturday in preparation to the Lenox Industrial Tools 301 to be held at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Reed Sorensen, driving the No 43 Dodge set the fastest time this morning at the average speed of 128.472 mph, beating Joe Nemechek, Casey Mears and Martin Truex Jr.

Canadian Patrick Carpentier was 38th fastest behind the wheel of the No 36 Toyota Camry of Tommy Baldwin Racing, just 0.428s behind Sorensen, showing without a doubt how tight competition is in the Sprint Cup.

“The set-up is far from being at its best and the front end has the tendency of jumping out when Patrick starts entering the corner,” Carpentier’s agent Robert Desrosiers told Auto123.com. “The team is trying to find what the problem is, so he will keep doing short runs this afternoon.”

The weather was nice in the afternoon for the second and last practice session of the day.

This time Martin Truex Jr (Chevrolet) set the fastest time with a 29.713 seconds, beating Jimmie Johnson (Chevrolet) and Greg Biffle (Ford).

Carpentier and the TBR crew vastly improved the handling of the No 36 Camry. Patrick ranked 27th with a time of 30,032s at the speed of 126.825 mph. The Sprint Cup race is scheduled to start at 2 pm Sunday afternoon.

King Richard Petty was the star of a press conference on Saturday. The King was asked if there was a future for NASCAR if the car manufacturers kept pulling their support.

“Although we don’t know that will happen next year, I think the teams will adapt and survive,” said Petty.

“During my racing career, I’ve seen two or three car manufactuers quit the sport and the teams survived. The manufacturers were providing technical assistance to the teams as well as some engine parts. If they pull that support, the teams will certainly adapt and continue. They’ll work differently, and they will continue to race.”
