There must be something in the air for Kyle Busch in Richmond, Last year he won both the Sprint Cup and Nationwide races. On Friday the Toyota driver won the pole for both.
“I love coming to Richmond. For some reason, it just fits. I’m successful here. Whatever that is, hopefully I can keep it going,” Busch said.
When asked how he did it Busch replied, “I was a little worried, the first lap didn’t come in quite the way I wanted it to, but the second lap, it really got going. I’m proud of these guys. Hopefully it will stick. If not, it will be a good spot.”
The only issue for Kyle, in the Sprint Cup race, is getting back to victory circle. In 2008 he won eight of the first 22 races, and last year his win total was down to four. His last victory was 21 races ago so he’s looking to turn things around.
“You want to win every race. I feel like we are getting closer and closer to winning every week but I don’t know how far away we are. We’ve had some opportunities where we should’ve won races. We’ve also had opportunities where we should’ve run 15th or 18th and we finished top-10.
“It seems to be paying itself off this year a lot more than it has in the past. We just keep working every week on what we know what to do and try to make the cars better.”
It was an all-Toyota front row as Michael Waltrip Racing’s David Reutimann was second fastest. “I kind I overdrove the second lap getting into (turn) three down there -- which actually underdrove it for me because generally I overdrive everything. It ended up being a good lap.
“From where we started to where we ended up finishing in practice, we struggled in our first practice. In our second practice, it was like a totally different car -- in a good way. In the end we ended up having a good effort,” he said.
Battling Hendrick Motorsports teammates, Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon who both said in their pre-qualifying interviews they’ve patched up the family differences will start third and fourth respectively.
Johnson pretended to throw a drink bottle at Gordon to liven things up. “I mean everybody wants the controversy, maybe if I throw my Gatorade at him,” Johnson said laughing, “it will start something and get everybody talking some more.”
Dave Blaney, Michael McDowell and Max Papis failed to qualify.
