Kyle Busch took advantage of a late race restart at Chicagoland Speedway to win his seventh NASCAR Nationwide race of the year.
When Brad Keselowski, then running second, ran out of gas at the restart; it allowed Busch to take the outside of race leader, Joey Logano.
With his teammate, Logano pinned to the bottom lane Busch regained the lead and held off his younger teammate to the checkered flag.
"I don't think I would have had a shot to win the race," Busch said. "It was going to take too much to get alongside of Joey, had the restart gone with Keselowski in place. … I couldn't make the third lane work around the outside.
"I probably could have run second, legitimately. But the way it turned out, I didn't have to deal with the 22 (Keselowski). Apparently, those Dodges make good horsepower, but they suck a lot of fuel."
Until that restart Logano looked like he’d defend his victory from last year. Although frustrated by the result he accepted the race’s outcome due to Busch getting the restart position.
"He did what he was supposed to do," Joey Logano said. "He drove down in the turn and got me loose. He beat me. I'm embarrassed more than anything else."
Brian Scott finished third in a Toyota sweep of the top five positions including David Reutimann and Jason Leffler, respectively.
Busch led a race-high 110 laps for his 37th Nationwide Series win.
Keselowski, who finished 21rst in a Dodge, continues to lead the series’ points with a 227-point advantage over Carl Edwards who finished sixth in a Ford. Busch, who has not run the entire schedule, is in third place.
Local favorite and IndyCar driver, Danica Patrick had her best finish in the five races she’s run in the Nationwide series with a 24th place finish after starting 30th.
“I definitely learned a lot,” said the diminutive female who appeared as happy as if she had a podium instead of a 24th place. “It was nice to run a clean race with no accidents. It’s so tough when you spin in at the beginning of the race, but it didn’t we didn’t do that so we trucked along. I learned by following those guys. We brought the car home it’s got a couple of dings in it, but, we took care of it at the end.”
