No, it’s not a new reality show. It actually happened in Las Vegas the other day.

There’s a new deputy in Las Vegas, and he’s 69-year old NASCAR driver to boot. Morgan Shepherd turned lawman the other night assisting an arrest of some banditos outside of a Wal-Mart in Sin City.

According to a report in RaceWithFace.com the Nationwide Series driver had flown directly from Phoenix to Las Vegas for this weekend’s race. Doing a little shopping with wife he was getting out of his car, near the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, when he noticed an incident of store security chasing three men into the parking lot.

"I just got out and took off after them," Shepherd told the website.

"I caught one of them just as they were getting ready to hop a little wall at the end of the parking lot. I yanked him down and got on top of him."

When local police arrived they tossed the winner of four NASCAR Cup races (and 15 Nationwide Series races) a set of handcuffs and went to chase down the other “suspects”.

As simple as shifting gears the ageless driver had done his duty.

"I cuffed him and sat on top of him," Shepherd said.

"The police department officers showed up and asked if I could hold him a while longer while they ran down the others. I told them he wasn't going anywhere."

Sheperd wasn’t going to add insult to injury "I didn't tell him a 69-year-old man chased him down," Shepherd joked. "He was probably 18 or 19. I told him he shouldn't be stealing stuff. There is just too much of this stuff going on."

After the Las Vegas police hauled off the varmints to the hoosegow; he and his wife continued to their shopping trip.

Deputy Sheperd will attempt to qualify for Saturday’s Sam’s Town 300.
