According to British magazine Autosport, former Renault F1 driver Nelson Piquet Jr will announce on Monday that he will contest a full season in NASCAR in 2011.

Piquet, ousted from Formula 1 after the infamous “crashgate” scandal of the Grand Prix of Singapore in 2008, worked hard last year to secure the budget to make a switch to professional stock car racing in the United States.

Autosport wrote that Piquet is about to announce that he will contest the full season of the 2011 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

The son of three-time World Champion Nelson Piquet Sr competed in five Truck series events last year, kicking off with an impressive performance on his debut at Daytona in February where he finished sixth driving for Red Horse Racing.

He contested four further races, scoring two more top-10 finishes at Texas and Michigan, while racing a Toyota Tundra for Billy Ballew Motorsports.

Piquet also competed in the ARCA series. Driving a Toyota Camry for series’ frontrunner Eddie Sharp Racing, he started the race in Texas from pole position and crossed the line in 9th place.

The Brazilian also took 7th place on the road course of Watkins Glen in the Nationwide series in August, driving for Baker Curb Racing.

Autosport adds that Piquet will announce on Monday the team he will be competing for in 2011. His management has held talks with several outfits over the past few months, including some affiliated to well-established Sprint Cup squads.
