NASCAR postponed the Martinsville Sprint Cup race due to rain and rescheduled it for noon on Monday.
Kevin Harvick and Matt Kenseth will start from the front row based on owners’ points because Friday’s qualifying round had also been rained out.
The last NASCAR Sprint Cup race to be delayed was last year at Watkins Glen. The last time Martinsville was rained out was in 1991 when Ricky Craven prevailed.
Former open wheel driver, AJ Allmendinger didn’t object to the delay. “I love it. Put it this way, I’ve been on the side of it to where when rain affected qualifying or something like that, it made me miss the race. Having to spend a couple years like that, I’m in a position now where I’m just happy whenever we get to race. Yeah, it’s difficult. It stinks for the fans and all the teams, but the fortunate thing is we’ve got an off-week coming up, so it’s not like this is gonna put everybody way behind. I’m just happy. I’m happy whenever I get to be in the car, whether that’s Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. When we get to drop the green, I know we’ll have a good car and we’ll be ready to go,” he said.
Because of the postponement of the race, the reconstructive surgery on Denny Hamlin’s knee will be pushed back to no earlier than Wednesday. He hopes to be in a car for the race in Phoenix scheduled for April 10th.
