The catch fence was severely damaged in the accident but still held up well and prevented the car from getting into the grandstands. However, seven spectators were injured after Carl Edwards' car crash following contact with Brad Keselowski on the last lap of the Sprint Cup race at Talladega.
Eight people were treated as a consequence of being hit by debris from the violent, high speed impact that Edwards' car made with the fence a few metres short of crossing the finish line.
Six of the patients have been released, while two of them were seeking further treatment.
One woman who was airlifted to a local hospital sustained facial injuries and is believed to be the most seriously affected.
