All-new

and critical to Hyundai's bottom line is the 2006 Accent, larger in every dimension but still maintaining its subcompact status. Now sporting a 110-hp 1.6L I-4 making 107 lb-ft of torque, it's tied with its Kia Rio cousin for most powerful car in class honours. A 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic drives the front wheels, while rear discs and ABS with EBD standard with GLS. Standard safety features include six airbags; two up front, two side-impact and two curtain-type. No hatchback will be offered at first, with all models being four-door sedans. Expect a 3-door hatch to join the lineup soon.

Hyundai Accent's kissing cousin is now Kia's Rio, which shares virtually everything under the skin. The four-door notchback sedan was introduced in Detroit last January, with the new five-door making its North American debut in New York this past March. Boasting a class-leading 110-hp 1.6L I-4 with 107 lb-ft of torque, mated to a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic, the little Rio delivers sporty driving dynamics, exciting styling and an accommodating interior. Quality has improved dramatically too, without affecting its bargain-basement price. A full compliment of features is available, but for some reason rear disc brakes and ABS are not on the menu.

2006 Toyota Yaris - Enhancing the Entry-Level Experience

probably wasn't prepared for how successful its Echo Hatchback would be when introduced a couple of years ago, but it became an instant favourite among entry-level buyers. The new model, now called Yaris, which is the same name as used in other markets around the world, will also be sold in the U.S. next year. Its monobox European styling is unique and interior packaging still larger inside than it appears to be outside. Power comes from a 106-hp 1.5L 4-cylinder routed through a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic, while ABS brakes are optional. The base price? Only $13,580.
