Ford is rolling out the first-ever performance version of its popular Explorer SUV. It arrives later this year with the best projected fuel economy among gas-powered, high-performance SUVs.
Its twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 will produce at least 350 hp and offers four-wheel drive with a Terrain Management System for enhanced on-road dynamics, as well as sporty design cues. A spokesperson said it was Ford’s highest-performance, most capable Explorer ever.
Fuel economy is expected to be about 14.7L/100km in the city and 10.7 on the highway, which GM says is about a litre better than Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango R/T with 5.7L Hemis, and almost as much of an improvement over the Range Rover Sport.
It features a paddle-shifted six-speed SelectShift Automatic, specially reinforced chassis for improved handling, and solid-mounted electric power-assisted steering rack with a faster ratio for better responsiveness.
