With the new cars GM is targeting consumers who appreciate the external dimensions and overall efficiency of a smaller vehicle, yet who may not want to give up luxury features, upmarket styling and exciting performance.

"The small car segment is key for GM of Canada," added Martin. "The performance, handling and contemporary design of the Cobalt and Pursuit will expand our market leadership in this critical segment."
Like the Cavalier the Chevrolet Cobalt will be available in coupe and sedan form when it debuts in 2005, while the Pontiac Pursuit will initially only be available as a sedan. A Pursuit coupe will be made the following year. So far there is no word on convertible models, but chances are GM will continue the successful pattern and introduce drop tops in 2007. Both new cars will be produced at General Motor's Lordstown, Ohio, plant.
