Surprised? We didn't think so. It would appear as though Lexus will be introducing a Toyota RAV4-based compact hybrid crossover between now and the end of 2012 as a 2013 or 2014 model year.
There are very few details on the new vehicle at the moment. So far, we've got an expected fuel consumption of 5L per 100 km and a power rating which should hover around 200hp. Some are guessing the Toyota Camry's 2.4L 4-pot and Hybrid Synergy Drive will be the powertrain of choice. In said Camry, the output is currently rated at 187hp.
Coincidentally, we've got a BMW X1 in test drive fleet and were just wondering who are its direct competitors. We had figured on the Audi Q3, recently spotted at the 24H of Nurburgring but could not really come up with a Japanese equivalent other than perhaps the Infiniti EX35. Now, we have a new player, proof that this segment has a bright and busy future.
Last fall, Toyota did say that they were intending on introducing six new hybrids between then and late 2012. We now know of at least three: Prius “v” and “c”, iQ electric and the CX 300 h.
