Manufacturers are working together to develop green technologies
BMW and Toyota, two giants of the automotive world, have announced a “medium-to long-term partnership” that will see them develop and share green technologies.

BMW will supply 1.6L to 2.0L diesel engines to Toyota. They will include them in certain European models as of 2014 in order to increase its market share on a continent where a majority of vehicles sold feature diesel engines.

The two manufacturers will also collaborate in creating a new generation of lithium-ion batteries for electric and hybrid vehicles.

This agreement will allow the two companies to reduce research and development costs at a time when the mad rush to increase fuel economy and reduce emissions has reached its peak.

This constitutes the second announcement of the sort for Toyota, which allied itself with Ford this summer to develop a hybrid system for SUVs and vans.
