French car manufacturer Peugeot announced in a short press release that it stops its endurance racing programme with immediate effect.

This means that Peugeot will not enter its turbo diesel 908s in the new FIA World Endurance Championship and will not contest the famed 24 Hours of Le Mans in June.

Peugeot won Le Mans in 2009 but lost the race to Audi by just 13 seconds last year.

The press release reads "This decision has been taken in the context of a difficult economic environment in Europe. Peugeot has chosen to concentrate resources on its sales performance in 2012."

The car manufacturer will focus on the launch of its new productions cars: the 208, 3008 HYbrid4, 508 RXH, 508 HYbrid4 and 4008.

We now understand why Peugeot let several drivers leave the team late last year such as Alex Würz who's now under contract for Toyota.

It is not known at this moment if some 908s could be rented and run by private teams.
