It’s that time of the year again. Right before Halloween, a bunch of automotive journalists and manufacturers get together in Niagara-on-the-Lake for an intense week of testing in order to determine the AJAC’s Canadian Car of the Year Awards. Check out our gallery of amazing pictures shot by Matthieu Lambert.

There are 48 brand-new or significantly remodelled vehicles on the roster this year, divided into 11 categories. There are approximately 110 members of the AJAC across Canada, and about 60 of them are voting journalists at the Test Fest who have chosen 3 vehicle categories to evaluate. Each vehicle must be driven between 30 and 45 minutes. Once those initial categories are tested and scored, we can tackle on a couple more categories if we have enough time.

It seems everyone finds time to test the contenders in the Prestige category, which this year includes the Audi R8 5.2 Spyder, the Porsche 911 Turbo S, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, the BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo and the Jaguar XJ Supercharged. However, the most tested vehicles every year turn out to be the ones in the Small Car categories, which range from subcompacts like the Mazda2 and Ford Fiesta to interesting new models like the Chevrolet Cruze and Nissan Juke.

Everyone’s votes will be summed up, and Friday morning, the winners of each category will be announced. Journalists must then drive each category winner (if they haven’t already) and cast their vote for the Canadian Car of the Year and Canadian Utility of the Year, which will both be announced at the 2011 Toronto Auto Show next February.

You know what they say: it’s a dirty job, but someone’s gotta do it.
