Today's gizmo fad requires driving mode. For some cars, they are illogical but for a hybrid, it is a must. The 918 has a button on its steering wheel that permits the driver to select one of four running modes. The environmentally-driven will often choose E-Drive mode, which is for electric power alone. It offers a range of up to 25 km or 16 miles.
In the typical hybrid fashion, a Hybrid mode is on the dial. As expected, it allows for both the electric motors and the gas engine to run together and to adapt to driver inputs but always keeping in mind economy. Next comes the Sport Hybrid mode which is basically the opposite of the regular Hybrid as its main focus is on performance.
Now, we're left with the Race Hybrid mode: this is for pure performance with driving dynamics and max power on tap. For that Nürburgring Nordschleife, this is where the button will be set...
The cabin creates a cocoon around its two occupants, holding them in contoured sports bucket seats split by a centre-console that is an inspired blend of Panamera and Carrera GT. Three free-standing circular dials face the driver as they would in any Porsche and located between the gauges and the lucky pilot is a sporty 3-spoke steering wheel that is all business and grip.
As for the exterior body work of the 918 Spyder, words can barely conjure up enough emotions and feelings to describe its beauty, functionality and purpose.
