With fuel economy influencing a growing number of car buyers and governments making efficiency standards stricter than ever, most automakers are focusing on smaller and/or more environmentally-friendly vehicles.

Porsche just announced the new Panamera Diesel which offers a range of 1,200 kilometres with an 80-litre tank.

Its 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 produces 250 horsepower and 405 lb-ft of torque, while achieving a fuel consumption rating of 6.5 L/100 km and CO2 emissions of 172 g/km. The car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds before reaching a top speed of 242 km/h.

An 8-speed Tiptronic S transmission distributes power to the rear wheels while auto stop/start shuts off the engine at idle to save even more fuel.

For optimum ride quality, buyers can select an adaptive air suspension to replace the standard one.

The Porsche Panamera Diesel promises the same level of luxury and dynamic handling as other Panamera models – all for €80,183 in Germany. That would make about $113,247 in Canada, but alas, the company has yet to make it available over here.
