For the third year in a row, the Société de transport de Laval (STL) encourages drivers to use public transit instead of their cars on smog days.

Between June 1st and Labour Day (September 6th), when Environment Canada issues a smog warning, the STL will therefore be offering a 64-percent reduction on single-ride fares, from $2.75 to $1.

Removing cars from the road
The Smog Alert operation not only aims to increase the use of public transit but also to reduce the number of cars on the road.

According to the STL, the incentive could help remove up to 3,000 cars on a daily basis, with an equal amount during the morning and the evening.

A reliable source
The campaign is based on Environment Canada’s smog warnings. Every day, during the afternoon, ozone levels are calculated by smog specialists.

Under 40 parts per billion (ppb), the air quality is deemed "Good." Between 41 and 81 ppb, the rating changes to "Acceptable," while anything over 82 ppb reflects "Poor" air quality, leading to a smog warning.

Information about the STL’s Smog Alert operation and Environment Canada forecasts is communicated to the public through the media and to road users through various electronic boards across the Greater Laval area.
