Several insurance companies offer roadside assistance services at very low rates so you can feel safer behind the wheel. But don’t use them too often, or your premium might go up.

When a driver uses these services often, the insurance company starts taking a closer look at his or her file. The consequences of filing multiple roadside assistance claims are varied, from a hike in premiums to the insurance company’ refusal to continue offering the service. In the most extreme cases, the insurance company can even refuse to insure drivers who find themselves in sticky situations too often.

However, there’s no reason to become paranoid. According to Amy Bach, a lawyer and the executive director of an American organization that advises consumers on insurance issues, it’s unlikely that an insurance company will increase your premium or withhold coverage if only one or two roadside assistance claims are filed each year.
