Before the race, the new-generation Corvette DPs were favoured over the Riley-Fords, but so far, every Corvette has experienced mechanical issues at one point or another. The once leading No. 99 GAINSCO Racing Corvette retired because of over-heating problems.

8:00 a.m. Justin Wilson currently holds the lead in the No. 60 Michael Shank Racing Riley-Ford. It's Wilson's comeback to racing since his season-ending injury last year. Seven hours and a half are left into the race.

At 8:50 p.m. last night, Marco Andretti got out to do his first stint in the No. 2 Starworks Motorsport old-generation Riley-Ford. Team boss Peter Baron can be proud of his two different generations cars, which are running similar lap times. Andretti currently sits 7th, while the No. 08 sister car of Lucas Luhr is third.

Still, the biggest story of the race is the retirement of the No. 10 SunTrust Racing Corvette DP, following engine problems while Max Angelelli was at the wheel.

"It's really disappointing, but at the same time, this is what happens in this game," owner Wayne Taylor said on SPEED.com. "We will be pulling the car. We had an engine issue, totally unrelated to driver, despite a statement that Max over-revved engine. There is a problem in the valve train. We're not sure what exactly it is."

In GT, the race is really playing into Porsche's hands. The three first positions are held by GT3s. Andy Lally is rounding out a double-stint in the leading No. 44 Magnus Racing challenger. The No. 57 Camaro GT.R of Stevenson Motorsports and the No. 63 Ferrari 458 of Risi Competizione are still in the picture, respectively two and three laps behind the leading car.

For BMW, things are not going as smooth. The No. 94 Turner Motorsport car pulled into the pits at 6:45 p.m. last night, with terminal engine failure.

Quite alarmingly, both Audi R8 Grand-Am cars of Oryx Racing and APR Motorsport have experienced clutch-related setbacks. Drivers of the two teams reported problems minutes apart from each other.

Sylvain Tremblay is currently at the wheel of the No. 70 SpeedSource Mazda RX-8 he shares with James Hinchcliffe, Jonathan Bomarito and Marino Franchitti. They sit 7th in class.
