9-5 impressed with turbo performance, mileage and refinement
Avoid any model that exhibits a heavy ‘knock’ or ‘ticking’ sound from the engine. A Saab-trained mechanic can check out the engine in the model you’re considering as well. Pulling the engine’s valve cover off for a look inside is a relatively easy job, and may give some insight as to whether the engine is suffering from sludge-related issues.

Sputtering acceleration or lumpy power delivery at moderate or full throttle could be the result of a problem with an ignition system component. Smoke upon cold startup may indicate a turbocharger wear problem, though with proper oil changes, the turbocharger should last the life of the vehicle.

Thumping or popping noises from the rear suspension could indicate a blown shock absorber, which may be leaking a fluid visible to the eye upon inspection, too.

Finally, all interior accessories, and especially the information screen and climate control system, should be checked for proper operation.

The Verdict Of The Used Saab 9-5:
Like so many premium models, the 9-5 has a list of issues to be aware of, though many an owner say these issues are far outweighed by a great driving experience, generous performance and overall comfort. A dealer-serviced 9-5 with full service records, and proof of frequent oil changes, is your safest bet.
