Smith said an example of the "intuitive" nature of Sky's design is that its "innovative multi-piece liftoff roof (which stows in the trunk) is a made of a translucent material that mutes the sunlight inside the vehicle."

The Sky's design is also "simple," Smith said. "We put a lot of thought into how things work so you don't have to. From the first time you look at it, you should know how it works. That's what we mean by intuitive design."

Capping off the design direction is the Saturn crest on the front, which Smith and Lajdziak called a "living badge" because it glows red when the car is running.

This badge nicely matches Sky's headlights and foglights, "which glow like cubes of Artic ice light" and are therefore at once striking yet "soft and not harsh on the eyes of other drivers," which is so much a Saturn thing to think about.

In a similar vein, the taillights are powered by LED technology that uses less voltage than conventional lamps and turns on quicker to give vehicles behind more warning that it's stopping.

The concept version of Sky will use a supercharged 2.2-liter, four-cylinder engine that sends up to 180 horsepower and 190 pound-feet of torque to the front wheels through a five-speed manual transmission.

Inside, Saturn designers used upswept character line on the steering wheel center and the door panels. Because the instrumentation is mounted in the center of the console, Smith pointed out, they were able to use a smaller steering wheel and that created "new storage opportunities on top of the instrument panel."
