Silver is the Top Automotive Color

Few cars look better in Silver than Infiniti's hot new G35 coupe.

Just take a look around while you're commuting and you'll probably see what the Advanced Color Design Team at PPG Industries, a transportation coating manufacturer, found in their most recent annual survey of customer preferences. Silver was the most popular vehicle color worldwide for the 2002 model year.

But popular is one thing, the fact that approximately one third of all vehicles sold in North America, Europe and Japan are silver is amazing to say the least. It almost rivals the popularity of Black in the 1920's.

Audi's TT uses aluminum throughout, enhancing its interior design and perception of quality.

"The technology orientation of consumers in North America, Europe and Japan - as well as the use of silver in home interior, fashion and architectural design - has helped boost the global popularity of silver for vehicles," said a PPG spokesman. "In addition, silver is a very versatile color that is attractive across all vehicle lines."

The consumers' preference for silver and other neutral tones continues to grow, stated the spokesman, exceeding white in North America and blue in Europe, while matching the enduring popularity of white in Japan for the 2002 model year.

PPG expects silver to maintain its popularity for the next few years, according to its experience with paint colors and consumer behavior.
