Other cars on the Hemmings list include:

  • The 1971-74 AMC Javelin is available with either a 150-horsepower 304-cubic inch V-8 or a 245-horsepower 360-cubic inch V-8, but the most sought after model is the Javelin AMX, with its 401-cubic inch V-8. Regardless of which version you choose, these distinctive muscle cars cost about $4,000 for one in average condition.

  • The 1965 Buick Riviera Gran Sport, which added a 425-cubic inch V8 to the regular Riviera model and impressed performance freaks of the time. Inside, there's true 2+2 seating, tilt-steering, walnut trim and a massive console and dash serving as "constant reminders that you're in one of the earliest luxury/muscle hybrids." Lentinello says there are Grand Sports needing some work that start at about $5,000.

  • The 1974 Chevrolet Corvette LS4 coupe didn't get the power its predecessor had (thanks to emissions equipment, it was limited to 270 horses), so it's less appealing to muscle car fanatics. But you can own this version of the Stingray for a lot less, starting at about $5,000 for one that needs a bunch of work.

  • The 1986 Dodge/Shelby OMNI GLH-S, which used a turbocharger to squeeze 175 horses out of the car's anemic little inline-4. Only 500 of the silver and black units were built, and Lentinello says they gave a lot of expensive sports cars trouble in the hands of someone who knew what they were doing. Now they start at about $5,000 in Hemmings.
