About 100 hours of work and Smyth Performance convert a used Volkswagen Jetta into a mid-engine sports car.

The concept is based on the recycling of a used car to produce a beautiful sport car. Take a Jetta sedan, keep the engine, the transmission and all the mechanics. Remove half of chassis, add a new body, wheels and other parts provided by Smyth Performance. That's the main idea, even the original prototype is still under construction.

Mark Smith with Factory Five Racing, a company he founded with his young brother, will spread his concept through a kit including the guidelines and the material. The kit is named the G3F kit. G3F is the shorthand for: Go Green but Go Fast. As Mark Smith details, being green is not necessary to be boring.

The converted car is lighter, faster and burn less gas than the original. 800 lbs of metal less offers up to 60 miles per gallon of diesel fuel or biodiesel. The Smyth Performance G3F can reach 140 miles per hour. It will cost you around $10,000 for a kit that will enable you to assemble the G3F yourself in as little as 100 hours. Adding $5,000 or so to buy a used Jetta, and you get an original sport car for $15,000.

Co-founder Mark Smith explains the G3F is a way to recycle a car that has already been built, rather than buying something new. "Driving a Prius is nice, and you get good mileage, but making a new car is not carbon neutral."
