It's a "science of small adjustments and gains" to create a vehicle with exceptional fuel efficiency, says Volvo. The carmaker has just announced that alongside their efforts with biofuels and hybrid technologies, there's a diesel powered "Efficiency" model which achieves mileage of below 4.5L / 100km.

"We are firmly committed to lowering the fuel consumption of our conventional petrol and diesel engines. By doing this we will continuously reduce the overall CO2 emission level for our whole model range," says Magnus Jonsson, Senior V.P. of R&D at Volvo Cars.

Powering the fuel miser is a 1.6 litre turbodiesel engine with 105 horsepower which is mated to a special "PowerShift" gearbox that helps it slash another 8% out of the fuel bill. These savings are in addition to the already-efficient C30 1.6D available on the market today.

Fuel savings can also be attributed to re-worked aerodynamics, low-friction tires, special gear ratios and engine management software optimization.

"This is a science of small adjustments and gains. Many systems and details in a car model have been dimensioned to suit all engine variants, from the smallest diesel to the most powerful petrol unit. This gives possibilities for fine adjustments to individual engine variants, particularly the smallest alternatives," says Jonsson.

Will the C30D Efficiency come to Canada? No word as of yet.
