Speedcar Series' first qualifying session of Season 2 saw Force India Formula One test driver Vitantonio Liuzzi take pole position.
Jean Alesi made the fastest time early in the session but he soon dropped behind finishing in 4th position. Heinz Harald Frentzen took over the lead from the Frenchman and stayed ahead for most of the 30 minute qualifying. Italian driver Vitantonio Liuzzi was in close second until he made a surge for the top spot recording 2:04.680 with 6 minutes left.
Frentzen concluded his session early and will be starting Race 1 on Friday afternoon second on the grid after he finished less than half a second slower than Liuzzi. He commented on his performance saying, "I thought I was in pole position to be honest, but I wouldn't have pushed the car any harder even if I was given the chance. I didn't want to risk damaging the tyres for the first race."
Hasher Al Maktoum, the only Emarati driver of the Series' placed in the middle of the grid ahead of talented international drivers including Canadian Jacques Villeneuve, Johnny Herbert and Stefan Johansson
Liuzzi was presented with a cheque for 10,000 US dollars for taking pole position. The Italian driver commented, "It's nice to win the money but more importantly, I'm here to win the Championship."
