According to a recent Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) study, 25% of car accidents in the US are caused by drivers being distracted by cell phones or another gadget.

Well, there's a shocker.

Don't lie, we've all done it. Looked down for a split second to check a phone call, or change a track on our iPod only to discover the car ahead has slammed on their brakes and you nearly rearend them while you were retweeting your friend's latest Flickr upload.

While the study's results are rather predictable, what's not predictable is what the GHSA study will change via road laws. Countless public service announcements have already been created and aired for years now regarding distracted driving and what it can result in, and yet we still have 25% of accidents resulting from such activities. So, what's the solution?

Perhaps more US states will follow in Canadian province's footsteps, banning the use of handheld cell phones when behind the wheel – although, according to the GHSA, there is no evidence that those bans have reduced the number of crashes on the road. And how can they stop people from fiddling with iPods, in-dash entertainment systems and GPS units?

Perhaps the answer lies in Ford's SYNC technology and voice-command systems will become the norm across the board. Time to memorize those tens of thousands of voice commands...
