This open-mindedness is slowly spreading throughout the community. "That's the beauty of it," enthuses Coogan, "our employees bring their new habits back home with them. And to emphasize the process, we've actually established a program for kids based on the three Rs." Last year, 3,400 students of all ages participated in the various program-related contests.
Even the city of Lafayette is emulating SIA's initiative. The mayor has just announced a program that he hopes will increase recycling in the city's facilities by 2%.
An ongoing initiative
The initiative to eliminate "muda" (waste in Japanese) is ongoing. "One of the next big targets in the plant is the cafeteria," says Terry Jacot, project manager at Allegiant Global, SIA's recycling partner. "Within a year, we will have installed the facilities required for composting."
And according to Denise Coogan, a windmill will be going up shortly, supplying electricity to the plant's ultra-modern daycare and sports facilities. "We're not just looking to reduce our consumption of non-renewable resources. We also want to learn how to use renewable energy. That's the next step."
