Keeping in mind that the Montero was originally conceived for all kinds of driving and off road experience, I did not expect the same driving experience than a BMW X5 or an Acura MDX delivers. The Montero's imposing size induces a feeling of supremacy on the road. The two front cambered fenders can also be used as guidelines to keep this bully centered on the road. The cab interior is remarkably comfortable and quiet. In spite of the interior comfort, the Montero is sensitive to lateral drafts and reveals mediocre at keeping linear. The loose steering does not ensure great stability either, specially at high speeds. The driver must constantly correct the steering to ensure a straight path. After 2000 km, I cannot tell you how aggravating this gets. And it gets worst. The Montero has such a roll in turns as to have the highest roll-over rate within the sport-utility category. Of course, one is to adjust their driving accordingly. However, there are situations where swift steering is required to avoid an obstacle on the road. In such instances, the consequences could be catastrophic. Fortunately, the Montero has an effective brake system. Equipped with anti-lock system, four ventilated discs and electronic brake force distribution, the vehicle brakes briskly in most situations and tilt slightly forward in emergency stops. The sport-utility category for this vehicle is a bit far fetched because the Montero is but sportive!

Boarding the Montero, specifically the test limited edition, one is quick to notice the luxury and sought comfort of a utility vehicle whose price tag edges the 50k. The dashboard is garnished with wood imitation fixtures also found on the steering wheel and the gear shifter. The main console comprises several stowage compartments with a two-level one located underneath the adjustable armrest. The 350 watt Infinity stereo system delivers high quality sound, but the addition of an integrated 6 CD charger should be made standard. The only option available on this limited edition is a small digital screen fitted on top of the dashboard. The screen provides onboard information such as fuel consumption, indoor and outdoor temperatures, date and time. The front seats are exceptionally comfortable with several automatic settings available. The heated genuine leather seats are also standard on the limited edition. The only drawback is an obstructed rear view by several head rests, dark tinted window and a spare tire.

As you might know, the Montero can fit up to seven passengers with luggage. However, a five passengers and luggage or seven passengers capacity is probably more descriptive because there is limited stowage when the third bench seat is used. When retracted however, the third bench offers a flat floor and considerable cargo. Considering it is a retractable bench, the third row offers astonishing comfort. This comfort is however several stretches and contortions away as access to the rear seats is made even worst with a limited opening of the rear door. The central bench is also fully retractable 50/50. Occupants can comfortably rest and set the seatback to their ease. Auxiliary air conditioning and heating controls are also readily accessible to passengers.

The Montero has a killer look, a proven mechanic and a robust chassis engineered to pull heavy loads. In the price range of $ 41,987 to $ 48,946, the Montero is far from being cheap. The true buyers seeking a real off road vehicle will appreciate the Montero assuming they limit the options, but for those who use their sport-utility vehicle to commute, a vehicle like the Honda Pilot offers more at a lesser price.
