Workers keep making improvements around the track
During our visit, we were able to see that the ground work required by Champ Car officials was a bit ahead of schedule. That said, there is still a lot more to do before the June race. Taller, more resistant fences mounted on new concrete walls along the entire length of the pit lane are just one example of the improvements being made.
We should also point out the famous deer fences that completely surround the track when a race is held. On two occasions during the Friday session, the red flag was waved to immediately stop all the cars because a deer had been spotted near the track.
Pierre Lecours, my colleague from the Journal de Montréal, had this to say:
''Right after the announcement of the Champ Car race in Mont-Tremblant, the organizers started working on one major issue: the presence of dozens of deers near the track.
Ever since Cristiano da Matta's accident at Elkhart Lake, in August 2006, Champ Car drivers have been worried sick about free-running animals in the vicinity of the tracks.
In fact, a Formula 1600 driver from Quebec, Ghyslain Thériault, nearly died when he hit a deer at Tremblant, last September. Thériault still feels the after-effects of this accident and he could need one more year of recovery and training before getting back to racing.''
The organizers promised an absolutely ''deer-free'' area for the upcoming Champ Car event. We hope they're right!
As for the action on the track, Sébastien Bourdais came away with the best time during the practice sessions, 1:16:41 -- which is about 4 seconds faster than the track record.
He finished ahead of Justin Wilson (RSports) by 13 hundredths of a second. Meanwhile, TAG came in 9th place with a time of 1:17:13 and Tracy, 10th at 1:17:56.
So, listen up all you racing fans out there: the first-ever Champ Car race at the Circuit Mont-Tremblant will be action-packed!
The general manager of the event, François Dumontier, hopes to see thousands of spectators. ''We will offer a unique spectacle and we hope that hardcore racing fans will come in from all across Canada.''
