Tesla has stated that when production of the Model S will start at the automaker’s California plant, the first 1,000 units produced will be Signature Series variants selling for 77,400 USD, i.e., the most expensive version of the highly anticipated electric vehicle.
Industry specialist Jim Hall, who also works for 2953 Analytics, believes this is a good business strategy, as Tesla will be able to make more profits while clearly establishing its position as a luxury automobile manufacturer.
During the fourth quarter, Tesla had suffered losses of 51.4 million dollars and a heavy cash influx would probably go a long way in reassuring investors.
Tesla plans on producing 5,000 units for 2012 and to increase that number to 20,000 in 2013. The base model is available at $57,400 and features an operating range of around 370 km. The Signature Series, on the other hand, can travel up to 482 km.
