A few weeks after the announcement that Montreal’s executive committee was awarding the implementation of BIXI’s second phase to the Société de vélo libre-service, the implementation of the new stations has already started and the installation of all nine bike docks, located in the Sud-Ouest borough, is now complete.

In the course of the following weeks, a grand total of 100 stations will be added and spread throughout the Côte-des-Neiges/Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, Mercier/Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, Villeray/Saint-Michel Parc-Extension, Outremont and Rosemont- La Petite-Patrie boroughs. Once the second phase is completed, the service will cover 400 stations. The total number of bicycles will also go to 5,000 across the territory of the city, which represents 2,000 more than during the first phase.

Mr. Roger Plamondon, chairman of the Société de vélo en libre-service, is thrilled to see his organization serve a larger segment of the population in the system’s first year of existence. « The overwhelming demand from both the boroughs and the population has allowed us to speed up the process. The BIXI users have already registered nearly 600,000 movements since the beginning of the season and our service is fast approaching 9,098 members. This is a clear indication that the program is a success and that the population is firmly behind it », says Mr. Plamondon.

Mr. Alain Ayotte, Stationnement de Montréal’s executive vice president, adds that « the statistics regarding user movements and the comments received since BIXI was officially launched have been tabulated and verified, which allows us to increase the size of the stations, improve the system and validate the selection of the best locations to implement the second phase. » Mr. Ayotte adds that over the next few weeks, new stations will be installed in several much frequented areas, such as Olympic Stadium, the Biodome, the Botanical Gardens, the CEGEP Maisonneuve, the University of Montreal, Jarry Park as well as the Georges-Vanier, Saint-Michel, Côte-des-Neiges, Lionel-Groulx, Jarry and Pie-IX metro stations.

Rio Tinto Alcan, BIXI’s main partner, continues its contribution to the project and financing of the second phase. « We are extremely happy to see that this project is such a hit and it only confirms the faith we had in it to begin with », said Mr. Jean Simon, president, Primary Metal – North America. « We are thrilled to contribute to this innovative service created by fellow Quebecers and now recognized throughout the world. Soon, this service will be implemented in London and Boston and our support to BIXI fits in perfectly with Rio Tinto Alcan’s commitment to sustainability and climate changes. »
