Over the years, this Bugatti became a legend and a dream for both underwater diving enthusiasts and classic car collectors. Then, on August 18, 1967, the car was finally spotted and later attracted many divers.
Last July, after such a long time under water, the Bugatti finally re-emerged but the damage was substantial. All metallic components had rusted and the bodywork was torn open on the right side. However, wood, aluminum, brass and rubber components better withstood the test of water. Still, it was estimated that only 20 percent of the car could be restored.
Proceeds from the auction sale will be donated to Fondazione Damiano Tamagi, a non-profit organization which seeks to address the issue of juvenile violence.
A hundred rare items!
In addition to this mythical Bugatti, nearly a hundred rare and highly-sought-after automobiles will be put on auction by Bonhams, including a collection of 28 cars that once belonged to a wealthy Andalusian collector.
Several items up for grabs haven’t been shown to the public for a really long time -- a 1930 4-Litre/8-Litre Le Mans-style Tourer ($675,000 to $825,000), a 1929 Mercedes-Benz 630K De Ville Town Car ($600,000 to $900,000), a 1935 Hispano-Suiza T56 by Spanish coachbuilder Baltasar Fiol ($675,000 to $900,000), a 1931 Cadillac V16 452-series Dual-Cowl Phaeton ($525,000 to $675,000) and a 1920 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost 40/50HP Double Phaeton ($375,000 to $525,000).
Bonhams will offer many other prized automobiles, such as a perfectly-restored 1926-1927 Talbot-Darracq Grand Prix which should sell for anywhere between $600,000 and $900,000, not to mention an impressive 1955 Pegaso Z-102 which starred at the 1955 Paris and Turin auto shows; that one could command a price of about $600,000 to $750,000.
