Volkswagen has unveiled its take on the famous black London cab, a contemporary affair strongly inspired by the Up! that could well enter production, allowing the automaker to take advantage of the European Union’s new regulations concerning greenhouse gas emissions.

The taxi is powered by a 45-kWh (the equivalent of 112 hp) lithium-ion battery, has an operating range of 299 kilometres and can reach top speeds of 119 km/h. As for recharging, Volkswagen claims the battery can recharge up to 80% in a little over one hour. If correct, these figures are rather impressive, but VW hasn’t mentioned the voltage of the power outlet required for such a speedy charge.

Inside, a baggage area has replaced the front passenger seat, and the rear seats have been pushed back to offer more space. Another interesting addition for passengers is a panel allowing them to control the air conditioning system and see what route they will be taking as well as their current location.

Versions designed to accommodate physically handicapped passengers and allow easy wheelchair access will reportedly be offered if the model enters production.
