F1 Teams Agree to 2003 Rules Changes

Michael Schumacher's excitement over the new rules is the one dampener on the positive changes agreed to by the 10 team bosses. Ron Dennis (shown), however, remains frustrated for what appears to be good reason. Ferrari will most likely continue its dominance. (Photo: McLaren)

As reported last Sunday, the FIA's Max Mosley has been forcing his new rules initiative on a mostly unwilling bunch of F1 team leaders led by the Grand Prix World Championship (GPWC), the organization set up by automakers DaimlerChrysler, Ford, Renault, FIAT and BMW, to make sure their respective brand's massive investments in the series pay off - or at least that their losses be kept to a minimum.

Will Canada's Jacques Villeneuve (right) have a chance of catching the top three teams or will he just have to remain satisfied trying to beat his new teammate, Jenson Button? According to JV's comments made after initial testing the BAR005 chassis is a major step ahead, but that said Honda's engine power is still down. (Photo: PlanetF1.com)

Rather than change the existing rules, a direction that would have the ruling body flying in the face of the Concorde Agreement it signed onto with the series teams, the FIA has severely tightened up on the existing rules package in order to make competition closer while hopefully reducing each team's operating costs.

At the end of the day, or week rather, it's inconsequential whether Mosley's hostile tactics were 100% sincere or a ploy to get the teams to agree to lesser rules modifications, the fact is, after a week of heated post meeting discord a 'final' decision has been announced and changes are afoot.
