In the same period in North America, Volkswagen was introducing a naturally aspirated V6 engine under the hood of its Golf/Jetta tandem. The Golf GTI and the Jetta GLX benefited from the famous VR6, with the 2.8L block delivering 172 hp. That’s a meager statistic compared to the sporty cars of 2021, but the combination of a small compact car with a distinctive-sounding 6-cylinder engine was – and is – a guarantor of good times regardless.
