1970 917 LH

With the same wheelbase but a longer tail, the LH “Langheck” was one of the fastest cars ever to race at Le Mans, its elongated body allowing for almost 390 km/h at the famous French circuit, and a 240 km/h average lap speed. It still failed to beat its 917K sibling at the race, but it lost with style and speed.

1971 917/20

This car was dubbed “Pink Pig” thanks to its swollen body panels designed to combine the best of what the longtail and shorttail versions of the 917 offered. Its ungainly look inspired the car’s painters to draw cuts of pork right on its body panels when Martini decided it was too ugly to wear the spirit brand’s famed white, blue and red livery. It didn’t finish that year’s Le Mans race, but boy if it wasn’t one of the most popular – and photographed – cars on the track.
