Toyota gave a preview of the 2012 Vitz, the European and Asian version of the highly successful Yaris.
Judging from the images released, and assuming the model will be carried over to North America, the new Yaris will have had quite a facelift for 2012.
The body seems to have inherited redesigned headlamps and a more aggressive grille, but the most noticeable change is found inside. The gauges have changed places, moving from the center stack to a more conventional spot behind the wheel.
The domestic Japanese market will have a choice of three 4-cylinder mills, 1.0-litre, 1.3-litre and 1.5-litre versions. Judging by with Toyota’s current offering, it’s highly likely that the new iteration of the Yaris will be powered exclusively by the 1.5-litre engine mated to a 5-speed manual transmission or a CVT.
Note, however, that the Japanese automaker doesn’t offer a CVT option in North America at the moment, and its inclusion in the Yaris would be a first. If Toyota decides to go the other way, expect to see the classic and ageing 4-speed autobox currently found in the Yaris.
