Many automotive analysts have been predicting that the earthquake and subsequent tsunami that devastated Japan would affect the supply chain to the North American plants of Japanese automakers. Unfortunately, those predictions proved accurate for two of them today.
Subaru announced that production of the Tribeca, Legacy and Outback at its Lafayette, Indiana, facilities would be suspended until further notice, and the company has no idea when it will start up again. The plant currently has around 3,500 employees.
As for Toyota, the manufacturer is no longer paying overtime and has temporarily eliminated the Saturday work shifts to determine the availability of parts and conserve them. Both automakers have reported damage to their respective plants, which will be out of service for a good while.
On a more positive note, Nissan and Honda said they aren’t experiencing the same issues.
