Popular Science magazine has just bestowed an award on two new technologies developed by Ford: the EcoBoost engine and the Easy Fuel capless fuel filler.

The Eco Boost family of four- and six-cylinder engines uses turbocharging and direct injection to deliver 20% better fuel economy and produce 15% less carbon dioxide emissions. Ford in fact reduces engine displacement to decrease fuel consumption but adds a turbocharger to increase power.

The Easy Fuel capless fuel filler uses an integrated, spring-loaded flap that eliminates the need for a fuel cap. This technology ensures that you never forget to screw the cap back on, saves time and increases airtightness, which eliminates the emission of harmful vapours. This new technology, currently offered on the 2008 Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountainer, will be available on the 2009 Ford Flex and Lincoln MKS. It will be part of the standard equipment of all Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles in 2010.
