Osakabe explains that, ''By more precisely measuring individual wheel speed, it is able to differentiate between low traction conditions. This enables a proactive approach to stability, with Symmetrical AWD holding the transmission up/down shift for smooth cornering stability.''
In addition, the automatic shifter now features an advanced adaptive shift control system, which Osakabe says ''controls transmission shift points based on driver input and vehicle load to optimize engine performance.''
The final powertrain tweak for 2006 involves new gear ratios in both the 2.5XT manual and automatic transmissions, which he says ''help to optimize performance and fuel efficiency.''
Along with the significant powertrain upgrades, Subaru has also ''refined the suspension and braking systems to give Forester for 2006 a more engaging driving experience and a more comfortable ride.''
The specifics of that involve a strengthened rear crossmember to increase lateral rigidly to help improve handling response.
At the front end, the lower L-arm mounting point has been modified for a smoother ride, while the coil spring rates and shock valving have been revised at both ends.
In all Forester models, Osakabe pledges, ''changes to the brake booster help improve overall brake feel and response.''
For 2006, the base Forester is the 2.5X, which includes in its list of standard features anti-lock brakes, air conditioning, air filtration, an AM/FM/CD/Weatherband stereo with four speakers, power windows, mirrors and door locks, heated exterior mirrors, and a remote keyless entry system.
Also new for 2006 is a fold-down centre armrest for the 60/40 split rear seat, while passengers up front get a revised multi-function centre armrest.
Osakabe says the more expensive 2.5XS and 2.5XS with Premium Package ''enhance driving comfort and performance'' with an eight-way power driver's seat, heated front seats, and leather-wrapped steering wheel, shifter handle and parking brake handle plus rear disc brakes, Electronic Brake-force Distribution, eight-spoke 16-inch alloy wheels, and a viscous limited-slip rear differential.
The Premium Package also includes a power tilt/sliding glass moonroof, dual-mode heated front seats, a windshield wiper deicer, an automatic climate control system, upgraded speakers, automatic transmission and a leather interior.
Prices for all models and optional packages will be announced closer to the 2006 Forester's on-sale date in June. As a frame of reference, the 2005 2.5X model has an MSRP of $27,995, the XS $32,695, and the XT $36,395. But we can assume that the extra refinement and sophistication added for 2006 will cause sticker prices to go up.
