Forget exotic cars and armoured vehicles: Uruguayan president José Mujica was recently offered $1 million by a wealthy sheik for his light-blue 1987 Volkswagen Beetle, whose market value is currently set at around $2,800!

Known as the “poorest president in the world,” Mujica said in 2010 that the German car was the only asset to his name. His international fame mostly comes from his modest lifestyle and the fact that he gives away 90% of his salary to Plan Juntos, a government housing project he himself launched.

In fact, should he decide to accept the $1 million offer, Mujica said he will give all the money to the program.

Other people have shown interest in the old Beetle, too. Last September, the ambassador of Mexico, Felipe Enriquez, offered Mujica 10 four-wheel-drive trucks.
