It may just be the lack of winter weather, but Canada's west coast seems pretty green. For that reason it is fitting that Subaru is exhibiting its Partial Zero Emission Vehicles (PZEV) here at the Vancouver International Auto Show. The 2009 PZEV models will be offered in Outback and Legacy sedan / wagon guise.

These vehicles are not hybrids and still run fully on regular unleaded gasoline, but the gaseous waste from their modified 2.5-litre 4-cylinder boxer engines is up to 90 percent kinder to the environment compared to an average new car. This statistic is care of a more complete fuel burn and the eradication of evaporative emissions from the fuel system.

More refined inside and out, the all-new 2009 Subaru Forester is also on display. The new Forester's styling has been refreshed, smoothing out the old browed look. The new model continues to be a safe and nimble compact hauler with an excellent all-wheel-drive system.

The Forester's power plants are also carried over, including the sporty XT's 224-horespower turbocharged four cylinder boxer engine. Unfortunately a five speed manual transmission will no longer be available on the XT; and, although Subaru offers a five speed automatic in their Legacy, Outback, and Tribeca models, the 2009 Forester continues to utilize a four speed automatic transmission. The benefits that can be had with another gear or two are notable; when the automatic 2008 Mazda5 was given another gear, its average fuel consumption rating dropped 1.2 L/100km.
