Racecar Engineering magazine has done some research about how the motorsport world has been disrupted by the eruption of the volcano in Iceland.

In fact, the first signs of the eruption of Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökullhas caused Auto123.com’ René Fagnan some problems back on March 20th when he was flying to Heathrow for the visit of the McLaren Technology Centre.

The Air Canada flight from Montreal to London was turned around because of the cloud of smoke and ashes, and that was one month ago. A new, longer route to the South was taken on the following day.

We are well informed that several F1 teams are caught in China for a few days, but a number of other series, teams members and race cars are stranded in other parts of the globe.

The MotoGP round due to take place this Sunday in Japan has already been postponed with the majority of teams unable to leave Europe.

In the United States, a number of British and European based American Le Mans drivers and teams are unable to return to base after the Long Beach Grand Prix.

Meanwhile, the FIA GT1 World championship teams are stuck in Abu Dhabi.

Several teams of the World Rally Championship are also experiencing difficulties to leave Turkey, the site of the last rally. In fact, many teams now have to transit back across Europe by road, a time consuming and expensive process.

In an interview to Reuters, Andrew Wheatley, business development manager at the M-Sport operation, said: "What would normally have been a 500 sterling pound ($800) trip is going to cost 1500".

"So if you multiply that by 88 passengers, you end up with a considerable amount of costs involved. By far our bigger issue is that our next event is coming in three weeks and this pushes our schedule into a difficult situation to try and be able to achieve those targets," Wheatley added.

The WRC teams need to be in New Zealand for the next round on May 7, meaning they have to be leaving Great Britain within a week.
